Our little miracle ckcs Josie

Cavalier King Charles puppies are fragile. It’s not uncommon to lose one at birth, or shortly after. They easily get chilled or dehydrated, or just pass away for reasons unknown.

For about 5 days this week, my whole litter had weird diarrhea. Watery, light yellow and very stinky. I took them to the vet several times but their stool samples showed nothing in it. We gave them a long acting antibiotic (convenia) and tylosin and probiotics. We than added Albon just in case there was something we missed like coccidia in the stool sample.

On Thursday of this week, I noticed the littlest pup, Josephine, was not doing well. She wasn’t able to nurse as long as the others and was seeming to be very dehydrated. She then seemed to be aspirating it as she started to foam at the mouth, and bleed from the nose while struggling for air. We started oxygen support and called the vet (again). He felt that she was too sick and the best course of action was to humanely euthanize her and to go to the ER (it was after hours).

I should also add that I was home alone from Wednesday as my husband and daughter went out of state for a college visit.

I called my husband sobbing and he had some good advice. He told me that while going to the ER was good, it wouldn’t be a good idea as then I leave my other 3 pups unattended for an unknown amount of time. He felt I should just love on her while she passed at home. So, that’s what I did.

Meantime, a friend of mine who lives in Spokane and breeds beagles (Dolly from JoyfulNoise beagles) drove 5+ hours to come and help – I had no idea and when she arrived I was so grateful for the help and support. My other friend Becky, who isn’t in “dogs” at all, came over also and brought coffees and made meals – I was so so grateful.

Dolly and I, with the support of food from Becky, subQd and held little Josie and her siblings through the night and Friday. At one point she was floppy and had lost all color in her feet, and tummy – she was all white. Her breathing slowed down to once every 5-10 seconds and she didn’t twitch (normal in a healthy pup). Dolly and I tried to make a plan of what point we should take her to euthanize her – it was very hard to talk about.

Dolly then came across a blog that talked about enema’s and the power they have to hydrate and replace electrolytes. The blog talked about in extreme cases you can do it every hour for 24 hours. So, we decided to give it a go. If you want to read the blog, i will attach it below. The recipe for the emema is:

1 liter of water
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
2 tablespoons of agave nectar
1/2 tablespoon of sea salt
Combine all ingredients in a water bottle and warm and slowly give your dog the amount recommended by the
veterinarian.
WARNINGS DO NOT use alternative sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose or stevia, as they will not supply
the sugars needed to balance canine electrolytes. Commercial products designed for humans may contain the
sweetener xylitol, which can cause poisoning, seizures and death in dogs.
The fluid MUST have electrolytes! NEVER EVER give a straight water enema. Again, the reason for this is
because a straight water enema will only dehydrate your dog further.

Dolly and I are both believers and so we prayed over her and committed her life and death to God. My mom also happened to call from NZ and she prayed with us also. There was lots of crying – it didn’t help we were running on days without sleep and it was midnight. All of a sudden Miss Josie started to twitch a little – her ears and eye brows. Then her feet and then finally her whole body. We tube fed her a small amount and all of a sudden she was up on her feet. Dolly and I were blown away – we prayed in thanks to God as I can only describe this as a total miracle.

Josie needed support and we continued to give enemas every 1.5-2 hours and fed her very small amounts from tube feeding every 1-1.5 hours. So, literally we were feeding and pottying around the clock. But it worked. She went from strength to strength and by Monday was strong enough to nurse off mom again.

I should also add that the other pups diarrhea improved slowly but surely over the weekend also.

Dolly headed home before a storm hit and thankfully made it safe and sound. And I sit and marinate in thankfulness to the miracle that I experienced and that I am certain to God be the glory. <3

Nellie’s CKCS puppies are 2 weeks old

Nellie is a wonderful mom and her pups are thriving under her care. She keeps them well fed and clean and they are very content little ones.

Their tiny eyes started to open this weekend – right in time for the 2 week photos. Enjoy.

Wintery fun in the yard

Winter in the PNW can be a little dreary at times as the weather is wet and the dogs can’t get out as much as we would like them to. It has been cold and so the rain has turned to ice, but since it’s not raining, we are playing outdoors anyway.

Enjoy the photos of them from today. I love watching them play.

Nellie’s CKCS pups are 1 week old

Nellie is a wonderful mom of her cavalier babies. They are growing strong and are so content. Enjoy their first official photos.

For their names, Nellie is “Notorious Nell Gwyn” and Connor is “Shotgun Rider” and so I decided to do 2 historical couples that were “notorious”.

Girl 1: Was thinking about Dorothy “Dot” but have decided to go with Bonnie from the couple “Bonnie and Clyde”

Boy 1: Was thinking about one of Nell’s boys “James” but have decided to go with Clyde from the couple “Bonnie and Clyde”

Girl 2: Was thinking about Margaret “Maggie” but have decided to go with Josephine “Jo” who was Wyatt Earps wife.

Boy 2: Was thinking about Nell’s other son “Charles” but have decided to go with Wyatt Earp

Christmas at Kazuri with the cavalier pups

We put up Christmas this weekend – we decorated the tree and put up our stockings – the festivities have begun. I couldn’t resist taking a couple of cute photos of the cavalier puppies – Sly is going to his new home today and so it was perfect timing for the very last photos of them all.

Enjoy <3

Phoenix’s CKCS pups play in the fall leaves

The beautiful thing about fall and ruby cavalier king charles pups is that they look so gorgeous together. The PNW has taken a cold and wet turn and so time outside has been limited for the cavalier pups.

However, we had an afternoon of a break and I took the cavalier babies outside for a little play in the leaves. We didn’t stay out there long as I didn’t want them to get chilled, but I took some cute pictures while we were there.

Enjoy – the cavalier puppies at 6.5 weeks.

Phoenix gives birth to her CKCS puppies

Cavalier king charles spaniels are notorious for not waiting till day 63 to give birth. I predicted that Phoenix would give birth sometime over the weekend and true to form, Sunday afternoon she started to get super clingy, not letting me out of her sight and panting a little. By 5pm things started to get a little more serious as she panted and dug in her bed beside me, and vomited a little.

She started pushing and we realised that there was a baby but no sack. These are the births that make us most nervous as it’s harder on mom when there is no lubrication. I could tell the baby was a good size as with every push Phoenix would yelp. I ask ed my husband to come and help and I held Phoenix’s hips apart as he gently guided it out.

Baby 1 was an 8oz girl! A beautifully marked blenhiem girl!!

Baby 2 got suck, once again coming without a sack, but this time even harder feet first. We tried so hard to get her quickly, but 20 mins of gently pulling with every contraction, we knew there was little hope of a live baby at the end. And we were right – our 2nd perfectly marked blenhiem girl was born DOA 🙁 UGH. We did all we could and rubbed her down to no avail.

At this point, I started called ER vets – I didnt want to pull each puppy out – it’s hard on us and the mom – and I didnt want to lose any more. 3 ER clinics said they were full and not taking any more patients. One told us to call Mt Vernon – despite being an hour away, we called them and they said COME so we jumped in the car and drove.

Phoenix and the blankets and her firstborn were on my lap and my husband drove us. On the way, she started pushing and had a tiny ruby boy. We later weighed him at 4.5oz.

While waiting in the waiting room in the clinic, she started pushing again and had a 2nd ruby baby boy – again small at 4.5oz.

The vet asked if we still wanted surgery with 1 pup to go. We decided to see if she could do it herself and went into a quiet room for her to labor. The final pup, a ruby girl, was another big one but the vet assisted her out and was able to do it so she made it.

I think we arrived home at 4am. Exhausted but grateful. Phoenix is a great mom and now the work begins.

Watson the cavalier gets BOB at Enumclaw

I was so proud to pilot Watson myself this weekend and we got Best Of Breed on Saturday under judge Mrs Donelle Richards. We then went on to make the cut in a competitive toy group and even played in the Owner handler group.

I am very proud of this 2.5 year old boy who is proving to hold his own and we are just a few points shy of his Grand CH now.

The Cavalier babies update

I got Covid-19 this week – thankfully I am vaccinated and so my symptoms have been fairly mild – mostly I have been exhausted and so I have been just in “get the basics done” mode. And so, taking photos got put on the back burner until I felt up to doing it.

The babies are growing like beautiful little weeds – they are stronger and playing together. They are running and wrestling and growling and have definitely found their sweet little voices barking with delight when I bring their meals. They LOVE food 🙂 It’s good. They are eating 3 meals a day now and only nursing a few times a day – Charlotte is enjoying becoming more of a playmate than a mommy.

Enjoy their latest photos.

Summer gets Reserve WB at COPS

It was a wonderful day in Puyallup today. At the Cavaliers of Puget Sound specialty, Summer (Kazuri’s Sweet Summertime Kisses) won her class and then went on to winning reserve to the 5 point major.

I was very proud of her as it was literally her 2nd time stepping in the ring (her 1st time was this time last year at the COPS show).

She was a little shy at first but by the time we went into the winners circle she found her groove.

It was a fab specialty – thank you to everyone for their hard work (Susan Lockleer – I am looking at you) and to the judge Dr. Vandra Huber who stepped in at the last minute to judge for us (the judge who we were supposed to have had an emergency and went into hospital) and found my sweet girl.

I also showed Phoenix (Kazuri’s On The Wings Of Love TKN) in the competitive BBE class, and she didn’t place today, but I still love her ❤ Congratulations to all the winners today.
