Echo’s beagle babies have their first meal

We gave the beagle babies their first meal – they all LOVED it. They all ate with great gusto. Honestly I cant quite believe how confident they are on their feet and strong they are. They are growing up way too fast!

Echo’s beagle pups have opened their eyes.

I love it when puppies open their eyes. Beagle pups that are content are just so scrumptious and Echo is taking care of her babies every needs – they want for nothing. They are rolly polly balls of glory. I am in love.

Enjoy the photos of them – I couldn’t wait for 2 weeks as their eyes are already open.

Rosie’s beagle pups first official photos

Arthur and Rosie’s pups are thriving and so today I took some photos with my actual camera (rather than my cell phone). They are now 2 days old and gaining weight wonderfully. Hope you enjoy the photos of these sweet little beagle babies. I still haven’t named them for the blog yet – coming soon (I promise)

Arthur and Rosie’s beagle pups arrive

We knew Rosie was close – she had been nesting all night and so that morning when she was uncomfortable and needing to “pee” constantly, we knew she had to be pretty close.

Around 12:30 she started big contractions and by 12:55pm she had baby #1 – a lovely 9.45oz girl.

Baby #2 came shortly after around 1:15 – a boy weighing in at 11oz.

Baby #3 was another boy – they just kept getting bigger (poor Rosie) – 11.10oz.

And true to form, at 2:20pm she had baby #4 – another girl who weighed in at 11.54oz.

We knew we were waiting on one more baby. It wasn’t long before Rosie was pushing again. This time, I knew it was a big baby – the head came but she couldn’t seem to get the body out. I yelled for my husband – he has long skinny fingers which help in situations like this. I held Rosie’s hips open and he gently guided/helped pull with every push – but after 15 mins of pushing when he was born, he was ghostly white – oxygen deprivation was not on our side. We tried every trick to revive him – rubbing, Dex, needle poke on his nose – to no avail. He had been in the canal too long and we lost him. He was 13.8oz – huge puppy – much too big for a little 13 inch beagle girl. We grieved the loss of him but also celebrated the healthy pups we got.

Mom and babies settled in to nursing right away – all are healthy and strong. We are so thankful.

Dutch x Echo welcome their beagle pups into the world

Echo showed signs of early labor and so I set up the bed beside her whelping pen. She spent the night nesting and going out to the bathroom and talking walks and resting.

Around 3am her “water” broke and then around 4am a little baby water sac appeared – I was excited that we would soon be welcoming a little one into the world.

Echo started to do little pushes and then would rest. Nothing significant. So, we continued monitoring her and taking her for walks. We administered a little calcium to help keep contractions strong and keep energy levels up, and she went for walks. We even did the wheelbarrow (just exactly what it sounds like) in case there was a baby malpositioned.

Around 6am I got in contract with my vet and told him what I was seeing. he agreed that if we weren’t seeing progression, to bring her in for an assessment and possible c-section at noon.

Around 11, I called and we agreed to bring her in. My 16 year old sat in the car with Echo to keep her safe and Dr Thoreson and his team assessed her and decided the best action was surgery.

It was absolutely the right call. There was a puppy that was stuck in the pelvis and his poor little head was a little cone head. He of course was fine, but at almost 11oz, he was a huge baby to be born naturally.

Boy 1 – 10.10oz

Boy 2 – 10.35oz

Boy 3 – 10.7oz (stuck boy)

Girl – 8.65oz

Once born, they quickly started looking for food. As soon as Echo was awake enough, we got them nursing – they knew what to do immediately. And much to our amazement, she was instantly in love with them – she wanted to lick them – there was no “what are these aliens?” – her mothering instincts kicked in right on the table.

I am so grateful that though it was not what we had planned that it worked out wonderfully.
